After the accident that killed Larkin May's husband Pat, she retreated to a life that was safe, but without color. She ate the same things, worked in the same place, and took up no new interests. Now, three years later, a dinner with her next-door neighbor and her childhood best friend provides motivation to make changes to her comfortable, but bland, life. With gentle persuasion from her old Irish neighbor, Larkin agrees to spend a month in Ireland, working at his daughter's B&B on the Shannon River. In the lovely setting of Ireland in summer, Larkin begins to unwind from the tension and loss she has felt for so long. She learns about the B&B business, makes new friends, and joins a competitive rowing team. Being part of the rowing community opens even more opportunities for growth and excitement, and Larkin begins to believe that she can, after all this time, contemplate being happy without Pat. What Larkin has yet to learn is that recovery from one tragedy in no way prevents another. When Larkin is again faced with loss, her choice on how to proceed may make the difference between living a colorless life of mediocrity or being able to step over her fear to live her heart's desire.

Nothing Random Shannon L Plate 9780989793100 Books Reviews
I loved reading this book. The story is intriguing and real, one peppered with beautiful 'I'm there' descriptions of Ireland. The characters, especially Larkin and Sukki, are ones that are true with heartfelt, honest emotions that I could relate to. Made me look forward to curling up at night to see what would happen next. For certain, I look forward to reading more of Ms. Plate's writings.
I love this book. From the first sentence to the end was such an easy and smooth going story . Never got bored and really want to go to Ireland now. I want to visit this town and meet the locals. This will be my overseas trip someday. Kee writtting Shannon!!!!
Excellent first novel for Shannon Plate! This book is quickly engaging, as you get to know the characters and start a little crush on Ireland. Plate's affection for Ireland is almost reminiscent of Steinbeck's love of the land. And written from the perspective of a therapist, this book will, at times, be as insightful on the human condition during grief, loss, and recovery as it is readable. You may just see yourself in Larkin May, but you don't need that to keep turning those pages. You'll finish it with a happy sigh and hope for Plate's next novel.
Great story and it left me wanting more. I have never been to Ireland, but after reading Nothing Random, I can't wait to go. Love the characters and hope there is a second book.
Right from the start, I was completely captivated. The author creates a rich tapestry of words that not only allowed me to feel what the characters are feeling, but to see and smell and taste her experiences. There is a richness about this book without it being heavy handed. The book conclusion was satisfying but made me long to know what happens next. Can't wait to read more!
Ms. Plate weaves a wonderfully insightful and compassionate story of a woman's journey back to living after tragedy and loss. This is an exquisite book, deftly and artfully layered with memorable characters, loving friendships, grown-up romance, and charming "makes-me-want-to-go-there" descriptions of life in Ireland. It's a book to be savored and loved. Highly recommend!
This is a well-written novel with the kind of attention to detail (and not only the psychology bits) that gives depth to and further adds to the enjoyment of reading the novel. I felt as if I were there for the whole book. And I, for one, didn't see the ending coming, as the author brought in enough conflict to keep me guessing. Highly recommended. More, please!
